Last updated: February 12, 2026

1. Who We Are

Apple TV Remote Control is developed and operated by:

Virani
Rogier van der Weijdestraat 2
1817MJ Alkmaar
The Netherlands

For any privacy-related questions or requests, you can contact us at: 📧 thomas@virani.app

This App is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Apple Inc.

2. What Information We Collect

We do not require account creation, registration, or login. We do not collect personal information such as your name, email address, or payment details directly. Subscription payments are processed entirely by Google Play and are governed by Google’s privacy policy.

The App may collect certain technical data through third-party services, but only if you provide your consent through our in-app privacy settings on first launch.

2.1 Analytics (PostHog)

If you consent to analytics data collection, we use PostHog to understand how users interact with the App and to improve the user experience. PostHog may collect the following data:

  • Device type, model, and operating system version
  • App version
  • General usage data such as screens viewed, features used, and session duration
  • Language and region settings
  • Anonymous user identifiers (not linked to your personal identity)

This data is collected in aggregate and is not used to personally identify you. For more information, see PostHog’s privacy policy at https://posthog.com/privacy.

2.2 Crash Reporting (Firebase Crashlytics)

If you consent to crash reporting data collection, we use Firebase Crashlytics, provided by Google, to monitor app stability and identify and fix crashes. Crashlytics may collect the following data:

  • Crash logs and stack traces
  • Device state at the time of a crash (e.g., orientation, battery level, free disk space)
  • Device type, model, and operating system version
  • A Crashlytics installation UUID (a random identifier that is not linked to your personal identity)
  • IP address (used by Google for providing the service but not exposed to us)

This data is used solely to diagnose and fix technical issues. For more information, see Firebase’s privacy policy at https://firebase.google.com/support/privacy.

2.3 Local Network Communication

The App uses your local Wi-Fi network to discover and connect to Apple TV devices on the same network. This communication happens entirely within your local network. We do not collect, store, or transmit any information about your network configuration, your Apple TV, or the content you access on your Apple TV.

3. How We Use Your Information

We use the information described above exclusively for the following purposes:

  • To improve app functionality, performance, and user experience
  • To identify and fix bugs, crashes, and technical issues
  • To understand general usage patterns and inform product development

We do not use your data for advertising, profiling, or marketing purposes. We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information with third parties for their own commercial or marketing purposes. We do share data with the third-party service providers listed in Section 6 (PostHog and Google), but solely in their capacity as data processors acting on our behalf and under our instructions, not for their own independent use.

4. Legal Basis for Processing

For users in the European Economic Area (EEA), United Kingdom, and Switzerland

Under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and UK GDPR, we rely on the following legal bases:

  • Consent: Analytics data collection (PostHog) and crash reporting (Firebase Crashlytics) are only activated after you provide explicit consent through the in-app privacy settings screen presented on first launch. You may withdraw your consent at any time through the App’s settings, which will immediately stop further data collection. This is the sole legal basis for processing analytics and crash reporting data.
  • Contract performance: Processing necessary to provide the App’s core remote control functionality (such as local network communication with your Apple TV) does not involve the collection of personal data and is based on the performance of our contract with you.

For users in other jurisdictions

Where consent is required by applicable law, we obtain your consent before collecting data. In all cases, analytics and crash reporting data are only collected with your explicit consent, regardless of jurisdiction.

5. Your Consent and How to Opt Out

When you first open the App, you will be presented with a privacy settings screen where you can choose to enable or disable data collection for:

  • Analytics (PostHog)
  • Crash reporting (Firebase Crashlytics)

You can use the App regardless of your choice. Disabling data collection will not affect the App’s core remote control functionality.

You can change your preferences at any time by navigating to the privacy settings within the App. When you disable a category, data collection for that category will stop immediately. Data that was collected prior to opting out will be retained according to the retention periods described in Section 8 and will not be supplemented with new data.

6. Third-Party Services and International Data Transfers

The App integrates the following third-party services, each of which operates under its own privacy policy:

ServicePurposeData LocationPrivacy Policy
PostHogAnalyticsEuropean Unionhttps://posthog.com/privacy
Firebase Crashlytics (Google)Crash reportingUnited Stateshttps://firebase.google.com/support/privacy
Google PlaySubscription billingUnited Stateshttps://policies.google.com/privacy

International Data Transfers

Some of the third-party services listed above, notably Firebase Crashlytics and Google Play, process your data on servers located outside of the European Economic Area, including in the United States. These transfers are not based on your consent but are instead protected by appropriate legal safeguards, including:

  • Standard Contractual Clauses (SCCs) approved by the European Commission, which both Google and PostHog have implemented in their data processing agreements.
  • Adequacy decisions issued by the European Commission, where applicable.

These safeguards ensure that your data receives an adequate level of protection regardless of where it is processed.

7. Your Rights

Depending on your location, you may have certain rights regarding your data. Below is an overview of how to exercise them.

For users in the EEA, United Kingdom, and Switzerland (GDPR / UK GDPR)

You have the right to:

  • Access the personal data we hold about you
  • Rectify inaccurate personal data
  • Erase your personal data (“right to be forgotten”)
  • Restrict or object to the processing of your data
  • Data portability — receive your data in a structured, machine-readable format
  • Withdraw consent at any time through the App’s privacy settings

You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority. For users in the Netherlands, this is the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens (https://autoriteitpersoonsgegevens.nl).

For users in California (CCPA / CPRA)

You have the right to:

  • Know what personal information is collected and how it is used
  • Request deletion of your personal information
  • Opt out of the sale or sharing of your personal information

We do not sell or share your personal information as defined under the CCPA/CPRA.

For users in Brazil (LGPD)

  • Revoke consent at any time

How to submit a request

To exercise any of the rights listed above, please contact us at thomas@virani.app. We will respond to your request within 30 days.

Since we do not collect directly identifying personal information (such as your name or email through the App), we may need to verify your identity through alternative means or may be unable to locate specific data associated with you. Where technically feasible, we will fulfill deletion requests; however, given the anonymous nature of the data we collect, user-level deletion may not always be possible. In such cases, the most effective way to stop data collection is to disable analytics and crash reporting through the App’s privacy settings, or to uninstall the App.

For data managed directly by our third-party service providers, you may also contact them using the links provided in Section 6.

8. Data Retention

We retain collected data only for as long as necessary to fulfill the purposes described in this policy:

Data TypeRetention Period
Analytics data (PostHog)We currently retain analytics data for up to 12 months from collection
Crash reports (Firebase Crashlytics)90 days (Google’s default retention)
Subscription data (Google Play)Managed by Google per their retention policies

After the applicable retention period, data is automatically deleted or anonymized. If you withdraw consent, no new data will be collected, but previously collected data will be retained until the end of the applicable retention period unless you request earlier deletion.

9. Children’s Privacy

The App is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under the age of 13 (as defined by the U.S. Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act, COPPA) or under the age of 16 where required by the GDPR or applicable local law.

If you are a parent or guardian and believe that your child has provided personal data through the App, please contact us at thomas@virani.app and we will take steps to delete such information promptly.

10. Data Security

We take reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect the information collected through the App against unauthorized access, alteration, disclosure, or destruction. These measures include using encrypted connections (HTTPS/TLS) for data transmission to third-party services.

However, no method of electronic transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

11. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices, technology, or legal requirements. When we make material changes, we will:

  • Update the “Last updated” date at the top of this page
  • Notify you through the App or other appropriate means for significant changes

We encourage you to review this Privacy Policy periodically. Your continued use of the App after any changes constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy. Where required by law, we will seek your renewed consent for material changes that affect how your data is processed.
